The old narrow bridge, which contributed to traffic problems, was demolished and a new structure lifted into place between Christmas Eve and 27 December 2011. Crowds watched a specialised 66-axle machine manoeuvre the new bridge into place. Cow Lane will be closed until 30 January while work continues to finish two new carriageways, a cycle path and footpath under the bridge. Diversions are in place until then.
